About Guild Branch

Guild Branch was founded in 2017 by Marcus Ellery, after fifteen years working inside organisations, first as a management accountant at a mid-size logistics firm in the East Midlands, then as head of operations for a regional housing association, and finally as an internal strategy lead at a professional services group in London. The pattern he kept seeing was the same: organisations would bring in external consultants, receive a polished report, and then spend the next eighteen months trying to figure out how to do anything with it. The report would be technically correct and practically useless. He started Guild Branch to do the opposite.

The name comes from a conversation Marcus had with a retired civil engineer who described the best organisations he had worked in as being like a well-maintained tree: the trunk is the core purpose, the branches are the different functions, and the guild is the shared knowledge and craft that holds it all together. It stuck. Guild Branch takes on a small number of engagements at any one time, typically four to six active clients, because the work requires genuine attention. We do not run a model where junior associates do the fieldwork and a senior partner shows up for the presentation. The person you speak to in the first conversation is the person doing the work.

Marcus Ellery founded Guild Branch in 2017 after fifteen years working inside organisations rather than advising them from the outside. He trained as a management accountant, spent seven years at a logistics firm in the East Midlands, then moved into operational leadership at a housing association before taking a strategy role at a professional services group in London. He started Guild Branch because he kept watching good organisations fail to act on good advice, and wanted to build a practice that stayed in the room long enough to see the work through. Outside of client work, he runs a small reading group on organisational theory that with monthly in Birmingham, and has a long-standing habit of annotating every book he reads in two colours of pen.
